Life with Diabetes / Dealing with the Diagnosis

New to type 1 diabetes?  You are not alone.  Every year, more than 30,000 new cases of type 1 diabetes are diagnosed, with about half of them being adults.  In total, as many as 3 million in the US are now living with type 1 diabetes.

The Outreach Program is designed to give a helping hand to newly diagnosed families by connecting them with other families who have gone through the same difficult time.  The Bag of Hope, the cornerstone of the Outreach Program, contains useful information such as books about diabetes, an Accu-Chek Aviva meter, and Rufus, the stuffed animal who gives comfort to kids with diabetes.  The Outreach Committee responds to your request for this durable backpack by sending you the Bag of Hope.  We then follow up in the early days of diagnoses with a call from a Mentor who has lived through the same ordeal.  They will then make every effort to answer any questions you might have or help you find a support group to join.

There are 30 plus families diagnosed in Colorado every month, and the Outreach Department’s goal is to support and supply information to all of these families in a timely manner.  To meet the demand we need your help.  We are looking for mentors who are located throughout Colorado and Southern Wyoming.  We are also looking for Mentors who are bi-lingual.

30 new families are diagnosed in Colorado every month, and the Outreach Committee's goal is to support and supply information to all of these families, but we need help to do it.  If you would like to assist the Outreach Committee by becoming a JDRF Outreach Mentor, or if you would like more information about what it takes to get involved please contact Melissa Crowley, Outreach Manager at mcrowley@jdrf.org.  You may also contact Melissa at the JDRF office at 303-779-0525 Ext. 7.
